SALAD LEAVES

It's strange - when I used to have shop grown lettuce I would only have Iceberg, little gem or Cos ..I always thought others tasted earthy and almost dirty if that makes sense!! Now I grow my own, I have found that I like most... there is nothing better than a plate full of salad with loads of different leaves. So again I will be growing quite a large variety - including :-

  1. Misome
  2. Mizuna
  3. Komatsuna -Green boy
  4. Mustard -red giant
  5. 4 seasons
  6. Endive
  7. Zuckerhut
  8. rocket
  9. Pinokkio
  10. Webbs
  11. Counter
  12. Red + Green salad bowl
  13. Little gem
  14. All year round
  15. Grand rapid

I set a few every week or so in a large bowl -once they are about 1" tall I move them over into the bigger tub to grow on , and I treat them as "cut and come again" -removing the outer leaves of each about 5 or 6 times and then I will remove the last few leaves and take the root out -at this point I will transfer some of the new little seedlings -so we have a good selection of leaves all the time

That is exactly what I do. I think this year I had fresh salad from May right through to October. Do you grow winter salad too?

Hiya..
I haven't grown any this time over winter.. but I may well have a go next year, although as soon as it gets nippy I tend to switch to winter menus. I got some salad stuff today for the 1st time in ages -and I had forgotten just how bland shop salad is!!!! Roll on spring/summer

It's definately worth it even just for the occasional ham salad sandwich. And it gives me and DS something to do when he gets itchy fingers to sow seeds. LOL I got some of those winter growing tomatoes too. They are slow but are growing
