This year I grew 3 German cucumber varieties -they did well so I will be using the same ones this year ..only this time I'm going to get them going up an arch, they scrambled along the netting at an amazing rate this year and finally wove their way through a couple of tomato plants too -so I figure an arch is the best way to go!!
Luckily I planted extras as I lost a couple to what I discovered was "damping off disease" ...I knew it wasn't down to dirty tubs etc... but we had a couple of weeks where we had serious down pours -so they had far too much water.
To keep an eye out for it...look at the stem -just above soil level, mine looked like the stem had peen pinched, as though the moisture had been sucked out. A couple survived and still gave me fruit -but they need extra support to stop the stem collapsing!
So I will be growing:-
- Vorgebirgstrauben
- Delikatess
- Riesen Schal
- oh and Crystal apple - a nice round cucumber

did you cover the arch with netting when you planted the cucumber plants? I have an archway that I tried to grow pumpkins up (didn't work as the dog decided that pumpkin plants are a delicacy...(!) lol! ) Wondering if we should try cucumbers next year..
thanks
Hi there
This year I put netting against the fence and they scrambled -but I had to tie them in as they went.
Next year Im going to use the arches... but I will tie some string back and forth across the frame to give me more places to tie them up - I found that with netting I kept getting fruit wedging in the holes lol
Im also going to be trying squashes up arches this year..luckily I don't have a dof to fend off ;-)
