Even though we aren't through Christmas yet, I have done some more preparation ready for the spring -when I want to be spending all my time setting seeds etc. So I'm trying to get the boring bits sorted (plus it makes me feel spring is closer)
So, yesterday we picked up 3 more big black tubs -the local garden centre is a bit like B&Q -when we first got here I was quite surprised by the price of planters/tubs... then I wandered into the plumbing section ;-) .... they had round or rectangular tubs -made of thick rubberised black plastic, they were great last year as the black keeps the warmth in when its cooler and stops the light getting into underground crops like potatoes etc plus they aren't brittle so won't crack in extreme cold !!!!
When we went yesterday the 75 litre tubs I have were €5.05 and the 90 litre ones were only 20c more ...so I got those instead.... much cheaper than the decorative ones and much bigger.
This morning I have cleaned all the plant labels -you are best off writing in pencil on them -it won't come off in the rain, but will rub off so you can re-use them. All the plant clips for tying things up are packed away, the plastic tubs from grapes etc are sorted (heck I have a lot -but it saves buying trays for seedlings) and all the toilet roll tubes are to hand ..so now I just need to finish planning what I can fit where -which should be interesting lol
I'm waiting for hubby to get home then I'm hoping to get him to punch holes in the tubs so I can get some of the dead leaves in the bottom, a bit of compost on top -then stand them on the garden, so Hopefully the worms will get in and do their work -the tubs we sorted last week had quite a few big old worms in -fingers crossed they are munching on the leaves and aerating the compost as we speak.
I have had a minor brain storm -if it will work ... the idea is to get hubby to build 2 of the arches slightly shorter and stand them in 2 crates each, stand them on the patio and then cover with the mosquito panels -so It will be like a poly tunnel shape -but mesh covered with one end for me to open and close -IF it works I'm planning on growing brassicas in there -the butterflies caused carnage this year...
Right I had better get back to the planning

Hi Ceridwen...
I had a nosey at your "notes" yesterday -heck you are organised...
Have you spotted any seeds on those I have just ordered that you might have room for?
I was thinking of this pepper
http://www.mr-fothergills.co.uk/catalogue/product/2718-1/
as it can be grown inside all year.. and the broccoli Rabe 1 too as it seems you can eat the whole thing - I know you are planning things that give you maximum return on the least space.
Let me know if you want any of the new ones and as soon as they arrive I can forward you some on.
Hi
Hmmm....I wouldnt mind a coupla those pepper seeds purlease if they're going spare.
Thanks for that.
Well...I'm trying to be organised. I've still got a lot of work to do on figuring out how much of each thing I require and what things will grow in shade. I also want to do a list of length of time from start-finish (ie from planting of seed to picking the food from it) - clearly I'm going to be more interested in the type of stuff that takes just a couple of months from start-finish (ie quick return on my "investment").
Anyways - I've been making a few additions to my Notes today and will be looking round for the further info I want to add that when I can.
Me - organised - well thanks - coming from one of the most "practical" of MSE posters I'll take that as a compliment...

I am off to order some seed catalogues! Fotherfills will be first on the list. It would be great to grow more than just courgettes, runner beans and tomatoes next year.
btw I have tagged you :)
Catz...
If you end up with different varieties to mine, and want to swap a few Or if I have any you would like to try -let me know...
Its a good way of trying more varieties without the expense ;-)
You can PM me through MSE ot the nonny mouse site if you like...
