How do I grow my tomatoes?

well, firstly I save all the plastic tubs I can -from, cottage cheese tubs, yogurt pots, and the tubs that grapes etc come in are particularly good.. your very own free mini indoor greenhouses! I start all my seeds off in these in a little compost..

When it comes to pricking out simply hold by 1 of the seed leaves and loosen the compost from underneath - at this point I like to put each plant into its own yogurt pot.

By the time they are due to go into their final position I have a large bottom pot(buckets are good) -punched with plenty of holes for drainage and a little gravel in the bottom, fill with plenty of compost. I then have some large plant pots with the bottoms cut off, twist theses down into the bucket about 1" and fill with compost .. dig a deep hole - plop the seedling in.. bury it right up to just below the first pair of true leaves (the part of the stem that is underground will grow roots making for a stronger and more stable plant)... the idea behind the double pot is that you water in the bottom pot... this makes the roots dig deep -again making a stronger plant.

The top pot is where you feed them...

As you can see I also did several to a trough too, although I think I was a bit ambitious getting 4 to a trough... won't do that this year... You can also see how sinking the tomato seedling down into the compost does give you slightly "wee" looking plants to begin with -but they do really well .

Also whilst I'm wittering on about my beloved toms... if you look at the trough at the top, you will see that the one on the right differs to the others -this is one of the Brandy wine varieties -that grow on a plant called a potato leaf ! So don't be surprised if you get a plant that looks like that...

Hi

and welcome to Blogland. I'm about the most p.c.-illiterate person there is - so cant make any comments on that. Just one thought from me - 'twould be good if you could put a bit about yourself under your "Profile" (that cant be that hard - even I managed it). It's a common feature of blogs too to do a blogroll (ie list of links to other blogs they regularly frequent) - so you might like to do that as well.

Re the bit at the bottom of this comments page - for one to "choose an identity" - I put all 4 options on mine - as some people get pretty confused with just the 2 below and - with that - you can readily see when other people with blogs pop over to leave a comment (as they "sign in" under their blogname). It took me personally months to figure out how to "choose identity" when trying to leave a comment on blogs where there is just the two options below.

Me again

Not a very big point - but I personally always find it very confusing when the time a post or comment was put on comes up in U.S.A. time - rather than British time. Doesnt matter unduly - I had that for months on my blog - but found that there is a way to choose which country's time one uses and alter things so that everything comes up as being the time it was done (in my case British time). (Just realised yours is on U.S. time - when I saw my comment is down as made at 1143pm, 29 November - though I made it at 7.43am, 30 November - I realised.

Hi

Me - yet again! Sorreee.....I'll go away and finish my breakfast in a minute honest.

Because I had to make my comments via the "Google/blogger" route I see that there is a thingie showing up on my screen saying "Email followupcomments to...(my email address)". I'm never quite sure on these things - hopefully its not showing up on other peoples screens - as I dont give out my email address on the Net.

Would appreciate knowing if you can see that bit too (or if its just me that can). If you can see it too - is there any way you can delete that bit for me please?
