It works out cheaper than garden canes (which aren't that cheap here)... I'm also going to put them into the bigger black tubs you can see (these are from the plumbing section of my local DIY/garden centre and work out much better value -plus, being black they keep they absorb the warmth)- I have dreams of those lovely allotment ones i used to see my grandad grow -huge wigwams smothered in peas -Has anyone EVER grown enough peas for their needs? I adore them, but they rarely even get into the house..they are "gardeners perks"
Anyway...on the "to grow list" I have :-
- kelvendon wonder
- little marvel
- kleine rheinlanderin
- douce provence -this is a new one for me and I need to get them in next weekend for an early crop
- oops nearly forgot the sugar snaps -sugar bon
The ones going out over winter will go straight into the tubs.. 1 for the birds, 1 for the slugs and 1 for me!!! The spring set ones will get started off in toilet rolls just like the beans

Where on earth did you find 'whoopsed' gardening stuff for sale in Germany? I lived there for a year ages and ages ago and never noticed anywhere :-D
It's very similar here in France, even the supermarket I tend to go to very rarely reduces foodstuff, even in the sales there is very little reduced stuff (apart from clothes), only things that are bought in cheap.
Re peas, no, I don't think you can grow enough so I usually stick to the mangetout varieties because you eat the lot and don't have to throw away half or more of your picked crop, i.e. the pod. I love to see the flowers too, I think they are really pretty.
PS, posting time is showing correct for my time zone, GMT +1 if that's any help re the comments on the previous post Dx
Hi dND
I know, I was amazed when I saw the arches as usually they seem to pack stuff away at the end of the season and bring it back out again the following year. These had got slightly damp boxes from "Hornbach"a garden/DIY centre... but at that price "who cares"... its hubbies job to build them (he is chief humper and dumper)-I got him to put 1 together so I could have a look -i'm no good at visualising sizes... they are bigger than I thought -8ft tall I think -so Im thinking of leaving one length of pole out or I'm never going to reach lol...
the left over poles can then be used to secure other things..
I would live to live in France, or even stay out here but we will heading back to the UK in a few years
Was just about to ask the same thing! There doesn't seem to be a Hornbach in Duesseldorf though and that sounds very much like a one-off. What a great price!
I've been thinking about some vertical gardening indoors this year and dND suggested I check out your blog. Like what you're doing with so little space. I don't actually have a garden or a balcony or even the possibility to put window boxes outside and although the window sills inside are nice and big, the windows open inwards so anything on the windowsills has to be easily moved. So after resigning myself to not being able to grow much more than a few herbs, I'm now thinking of just giving up a few square feet of my sitting room and trying growing some things indoors. The sun shines full in the windows for most of the day so it can't be that much different to a greenhouse!
